We work in partnership with others to support a range of livelihoods and food security, WASH and health, sustainable energy and gender equality programmes reaching over 1,000,000 people a year across Malawi. Globally, we work in nine countries across Africa, Asia and South America. SHA currently operates in 12 districts in Malawi, supporting 23 on-going projects. In Malawi. our long-term vision is sustainable livelihoods and healthy lives for all in a changing climate. Our mission is to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality, and the impact of climate change through community-led, market-based, and enterprise-focused approaches, so that people have access to nutritious food, clean water, decent employment, and incomes, while sustaining natural resources. We want to see all people in Malawi determining their own lives, supported by strong and accountable government services, and effective local markets and value chains.

  1. About the Project

The GIZ Food and Nutrition Security Programme (FNSP) aims at improving the nutrition situation of women and children under 24 months in Dedza and Salima districts. The programme is implemented by implementing partners (IPs); CARE International in Salima and Self Help Africa in Dedza. FNSP recognises that gender inequality is an underlying cause of malnutrition and food and nutrition insecurity, and that incorporating gender sensitive and specific interventions into FNSP is essential to improve the diets of women and children and achieve the programme’s goals. The programme acknowledges that to ensure effectiveness and sustainability, a holistic understanding of gender inequalities on household, community, and structural level is essential.

FNSP acknowledges that, due to women’s customary roles as “care-givers” in Malawian society, nutrition programming has historically placed a strong emphasis on women. But in recent years, the program has expanded its focus beyond women’s capacity and willingness to consume and feed their children diversified foods. The program now acknowledges the degree of decision-making authority and influence that fathers and husbands possess at the household level and aims to utilize that influence to promote positive nutrition outcomes.
