1. INTRODUCTION

PressCane Limited is a leading Ethanol distillery company in Malawi, established in 2004 and operating under the conglomerate Press Corporation Limited and Cane Products Limited. Located in Chikwawa on the west bank of the Shire River, PressCane produces high-quality ethanol products including fuel ethanol (anhydrous alcohol), potable alcohol, and industrial alcohol.

The company uses sugarcane molasses as raw material to the production of ethanol through advanced molecular sieve dehydration technology to produce fuel ethanol, potable ethanol and industrial ethanol, major products supplied to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for fuel blending, beverage manufacturing sector and industrial sectors.

PressCane Limited is seeking the services of a qualified consultant to undertake a detailed carbon market potential assessment for the company. The consultancy aims to undertake a comprehensive exploration of the carbon market potential for PressCane Limited to identify emissions reduction strategies, and evaluate the financial viability and feasibility of market participation.

2. SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of work for this consultancy among other things include:

1. Carbon Credit Potential Assessment:

  1. Conduct a company-wide rapid assessment of PressCane’s carbon credit potential.
  2. Identify key sources of emissions and high potential areas for reduction.
  3. Develop a Mitigation Activity Idea Note (MAIN) and a Project Idea Note (PIN). iv. Create a Mitigation Activity Design Document (MADD) and a Project Design Document (PDD).

2. Process and Documentation:

  1. Support management with local stakeholder consultations and obtaining a Letters of No Objection, and project registration from relevant stake holders and regulators.

3. OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives of the of the study include:

  1. Assess Emissions: Quantify emissions across all stages of PressCane’s value chain.
  2. Identify Reduction Opportunities: Pinpoint key sources of emissions and high potential areas for reduction.
  3. Economic Analysis: Analyze trade-offs between carbon emission reduction, economic benefits, and social impacts.
  4. Market Participation: Assess financial viability and potential for participation in carbon markets.

4. REQUIRED SUBMISSIONS

Prospective consultants are required to submit the following:

  1. Documentation List: A list of required documentation the client should prepare to facilitate the assessment works.
  2. Codes and Standards: Indicate relevant codes and standards that the technical assessment will adhere to.
  3. Method Statement: A detailed method statement on how the assessment will be executed, including:
    1. Biography of Personnel: Competent personnel’s qualifications/certifications and their time period on-site.
    2. Task Impact: Identification of tasks that will require equipment to be taken offline, impacting production.
    3. Risk Analysis: Related Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) considerations, including hazards and mitigations.
    4. Equipment List: List of equipment to be used in completing the tasks under this assignment.
    5. Execution Schedule: A well-detailed execution schedule indicating milestones and delivery periods for all tasks.

5. REQUIRED OUTCOMES

Consultants are expected to deliver a detailed project report containing:

  1. Inception Report: Issuance of an inception report at the start of the consultancy.
  2. Assessment Report: Produce a rapid assessment report detailing PressCane’s potential to implement and manage a carbon project.
  3. Project Idea Note (PIN): Develop a Project Idea Note (PIN) based on the assessment findings.
  4. Data Sets: Develop relevant data sets to support the findings and recommendations.
