Summary
Water For People is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that works with people and partners to develop innovative and long-lasting solutions to the water, sanitation, and hygiene problems globally. The organization strives to continually improve, experiment with promising new ideas, and leverage resources to multiply its impact.
Water For People in collaboration with Ministry of Water and Sanitation is implementing a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector system strengthening project with support from the British Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) called WASH Systems for Health Program (WS4H). In addition, Water For People with support from Charity Water is also implementing a WASH service project in its focus districts. As part of the Project Implementation, Water For People now intends to recruit for the following positions to be part of the Program Team.
WASH Project Officer (1)-Ntchisi Office (2 Years Contract subject to renewal)
The WASH Project Officer is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the project in close collaboration with District partners. The Project Officer will be reporting to the District Coordinator.
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure effective delivery all annual WASH targets
- Liaise with District Council Coordinating Team for WASH in planning and tracking progress towards achievement of project objective as outlined in the Multiyear Operational Plans (MOP).
- Collaborate with and other relevant government department in the dissemination of information related to water, sanitation and hygiene and development of IEC materials to assist in the promotion of water supply management, sanitation, and hygiene
- Collaborate with District Councils and District Health Office in facilitating demand creation activities for improved sanitation.
- Lead teams in conducting Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) surveys including willingness to pay and customer satisfaction surveys in all targeted areas.
- Work closely with Councils in identifying, training and mentoring Water Point Committees and other management committees on sustainable water and sanitation management.
- Facilitate strong and sustainable linkages between District Councils, water supply scheme management committees, and expert service providers to enhance sustainable management of water systems.
- Work closely with local implementing partners (NGOs, private sector, and CBOs) in the targeted areas to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness in the implementation of programme activities.
- Participate and contribute in the development of Joint Action Plans and Reviews of interventions in the target areas with other district stakeholders
- Lead the development/review of training manuals, checklists, and advanced monitoring tools on water scheme which enhance scheme performance, monitoring, reporting, and data management.
- In liaison with other project staff, participate actively in development of Monitoring and Evaluation plan for Water, sanitation, and hygiene components of the program in project area
Qualification and experience
- A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, Environmental Health, Water Resources management and Development, Civil Engineering, or related field is preferred.
- Over 3 years of experience in water and sanitation projects working in partnership with NGOs and private sector is necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability

- Demonstrated success in project implementation.
- A good understanding of the requirements in the implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of international grant funds; its effectiveness and accountability Must be flexible, able to work under tight deadlines and have excellent follow-through skills. Be a self-starter and work with limited supervision.
- Excellent verbal/written communications and presentation skills and good analytical skills
- Experience and Knowledge of Development work related issues in Malawi.
- Competent in use of MS Word, Excel, and a statistical analysis program (preference for SPSS or Access)
