Tobacco Commission
THE ORGANISATION
The Tobacco Commission is a statutory corporation established by an Act of Parliament, the Tobacco Industry Act No. 5 of 2024. The major function of the institution is to regulate and promote the development of the tobacco industry in Malawi.
To ensure that its mandate is carried out effectively and efficiently, the Tobacco Commission invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following vacancies:
TRAINEE CLASSIFIER (GRADE TC 7)
LOCATION: Lilongwe / Mzuzu / Limbe / Kasungu Division Offices
JOB FUNCTION
Providing tobacco classification and arbitration services in the Commission
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Classify and award correct grades to tobacco bales before sales
- Ensure timely opening of tobacco sales on the Auction Floors
- Arbitrate on cases presented on the floors after the sale of tobacco and on any other cases presented by buyers or growers regarding the sale of tobacco and maintain impartial decision
- Enforce rules and regulations that govern tobacco sales and deliveries
- Collect tobacco samples for submission for pesticide residue and nicotine levels analysis
- Conduct tobacco classification, grading, and presentation courses
- Preparation and submission of weekly, monthly and annual sales reports
- Identifying pest-infected tobacco bales for necessary remedial action
- Solve job-related challenges
- Carry out and submit reports on tobacco crop assessment surveys
- Scrutinize grower registration applications and make appropriate recommendations
- Submit weekly and monthly reports on classification and arbitration issues emerging from the auction floors or as need arises
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The candidate must possess at least a Diploma in Agriculture Extension or related qualification. Applicants that are in possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, or Agriculture Economics will have an added advantage just as those with experience in the tobacco industry.
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
The candidate must demonstrate the following person specifications:
- Knowledge of the fabric of the tobacco industry in Malawi
- Basic knowledge of tobacco production and marketing and its related challenges
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Good analytical skills and ability to resolve issues with speed
- Impartiality, objectivity and high levels of integrity
