EGPAF has worked in Malawi since 2001. Today, EGPAF Malawi implements evidence-based HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions in 177 health facilities in nine districts through EGPAF’s U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief/U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (PEPFAR/CDC) – funded Achieving HIV Epidemic Control through Scaling Up Quality Testing, Care and Treatment in Malawi.

Job Description

How will you fight for an AIDS-free generation?

Under the vision and direction of the Public Health Research and Evaluation Director (PHRED), the Senior Biostatistician will manage the collection, organization, analysis, and reporting of quantitative data, including large patient-level datasets. The Biostatistician will lead HIS metadata analysis and modeling efforts, working closely with the Department of HIV and AIDS, and will be responsible for developing and implementing data quality strategies. This role requires collaboration with the EGPAF evaluation/research teams and the central data repository team to conduct data mining (SQL), quality assurance, and control, producing scientific products and analytic reports for national and global stakeholders.

No two days are alike at EGPAF, but what can you expect in this role?

  1. Develop study protocols and data collection instruments.
  2. Prepare policy briefs and analytical papers with age and gender-disaggregated data.
  3. Analyze HIS system data, conduct quality assurance, clean and manipulate raw data, and model HIV outcomes using appropriate statistical platforms.
  4. Address data challenges, such as gaps or inconsistent reporting, and propose actionable solutions.
  5. Maintain communication across all project teams and provide clear technical support to field staff and consultants through various channels.
  6. Assist with program management and planning activities.
  7. Work independently with minimal direction while also collaborating effectively in a team environment.

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in biostatistics, statistics, or a related field, with coursework in epidemiology or applied economics and at least five years of relevant experience.
  2. Strong quantitative skills and research publication experience, demonstrated through at least 3 years of related work and a solid publication record.
  3. Proficiency in statistical software such as Stata and SAS and expertise in SQL, Python, or R. Experience with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik Sense) is an added advantage.
  4. Expertise in evaluation design and analysis using advanced models, such as generalized linear models, logit/probit models, survival analysis, and multivariate statistical techniques.
  5. Communication: Ability to translate complex data into clear and accessible written and verbal formats for diverse audiences.
  6. Presentation Skills: Ability to present technical data in multimedia formats.
  7. Time Management: Capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines efficiently.

Additional Information

  1. A PhD in biostatistics, statistics, or statistical epidemiology.
  2. Experience working in global HIV & AIDS fields is preferred.
  3. Experience working or studying in developing countries.
  4. Collaborating effectively with diverse groups, partners, and colleagues.
