Lotus (Africa) Limited is a leading Africa-focused advanced uranium company with significant scale and resources. The Company holds an 85% interest in the Kayerekera Uranium Project in Karonga, Malawi.

Lotus will be undertaking refurbishment and maintenance of the process plant and other facilities in preparation for production set to commence in the near future.

Lotus (Africa) Limited invites applications from suitably qualified energetic and self-motivated male or female Malawian nationals to join its team on a six months’ fixed term contract at Kayelekera Mine in Karonga District in the position below:

Safety and Fire Officer (Required 1)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Safety and Fire Officer will be responsible for providing visible and high-level safety support to operational personnel to ensure the highest level of Health and Safety is achieved.

REPORTING TO THE SAFETY, HEALTH & RADIATION (SHR) COORDINATOR, THE ROLE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Assisting with the implementation of Lotus Safety and Health Management Plan.
  • Providing visible and high level safety support to Kayelekera Mine and Contractor personnel to ensure the safe and efficient operations within all departments.
  • Assisting with Health, Safety and Training programmes on site as required and to liaise with environmental, medical and security teams when necessary.
  • Ensuring all personnel and contractors comply with Lotus’ specified training procedures, policies and systems.
  • Ensuring all contractors’ equipment is being maintained and monitored using a comprehensive system which is transparent and can be audited at any time, e.g. pre-start checks, maintenance scheduling and documented fault reporting and corrective actions.
  • Actively facilitating the risk assessment process and promote a risk management culture at
    Kayelekera Mine.
  • Preparing and assisting in the delivery of general and area specific inductions and other necessary training e.g. FLRA, Courageous Safety Leadership, Cultural Awareness etc.
  • Ensuring regular inspections are conducted within all areas of the mine site including facilities manned by contractors.
  • Undertaking accident/incident investigations as required.
  • Preparing safety statistics on a weekly and monthly basis and report trends.
  • Preparing a monthly report of activities and statistics conducted during the period in an accurate and timely manner for inclusion in the site-wide monthly report.
  • Conducting regular audits/job observations to determine the level of compliance with PPE requirements.
  • Liaising with other sections in the Department to ensure integrated operation of the department and to achieve stated objectives.
  • Attending relevant departmental safety related meetings as agreed with the SHR Coordinator.
  • Regularly liaising with other Departmental heads and their staff as required.
  • Maintaining a pro-active approach to all aspects of operational safety.
  • Carrying out other duties as required or directed by the SHR Coordinator.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent, those with Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or other related discipline will have an added advantage.
  • 3 years’ experience in the mining or construction industries.
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence.

  • Ability to implement effective safety controls for working at heights, confined spaces, excavations, electrical tasks, and scaffolding.
  • Ability to interact with other departments, contractors, Project Managers and safety personnel.
  • Possession of excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Working knowledge of Safety Management Systems.
  • Experience in accident/incident investigation and reporting.
  • Experience in training of site personnel in inductions, safety practices and procedures
  • Auditing experience
