BACKGROUND

The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) is a Statutory Corporation established by the Investment and Export Promotion Act of 2024. It is mandated to promote and facilitate investment and exports in Malawi, facilitate allocation of land to investors and regulate, implement, monitor and supervise all aspects of the special economic zones

The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) is planning to recruit a Public Relations Manager and a Trade Promotion Officer to fill existing vacancies.

POSITION: Public Relations Manager -Grade 3

The Public Relations Manager responsible to the Chief Executive Officer will develop and execute PR strategies that enhance MITC’s reputation and position Malawi as a preferred destination for investment and trade. This role involves creating targeted

communication campaigns to attract investors, support exporters, and raise awareness of Malawi’s trade and investment potential. Working closely with the Investment and Trade Promotion and Planning and Research Departments, the PR Manager will be instrumental in promoting Malawi’s investment and export opportunities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develop and Implement PR Strategies

  1. Design and execute PR campaigns to position Malawi as a leading investment and trade destination, emphasizing key sectors and investment and export opportunities.
  2. Develop and implement PR strategies to establish MITC as the leading institution facilitating investment and trade in Malawi, highlighting its key initiatives, services, and successes in attracting investment and supporting export growth.
  3. Create narratives that appeal to both domestic and international audiences, aligning with MITC’s investment and trade objectives.
  4. Collaborate with industry stakeholders to identify and communicate unique investment and export opportunities.

2. Media Relations

  1. Establish and maintain relationships with media outlets (both local and international)
  2. Draft and distribute press releases, articles, and features that showcase successful investment stories and export success cases.
  3. Organize press conferences, investor briefings, and media tours to engage journalists and showcase Malawi’s trade and investment landscape.

3. Crisis Communication Management

  1. Develop a crisis communication plan to manage and protect MITC’s reputation during emergencies.
  2. Serve as the primary contact for media during crises, ensuring accurate and timely responses.

4. Content Creation and Brand Messaging

  1. Develop high-quality promotional materials, including investment guides, sector brochures, and export success stories.
  2. Ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels, reinforcing MITC’s role in facilitating investment and trade in Malawi.

5. Event Planning and Coordination

  1. Support the planning and coordination of events such as trade fairs, business forums, and international expos to showcase Malawi’s trade and investment opportunities.
  2. Work with internal teams to develop promotional materials and ensure MITC’s effective participation in events.

6. Digital Communications and Social Media Management

  1. Oversee MITC’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.), ensuring consistent and professional communication that aligns with MITC’s brand and objectives.
  2. Create and schedule engaging content (posts, graphics, videos, etc.) that promotes MITC’s activities, investment opportunities, and success stories, as well as Malawi’s trade and investment potential.

Major Working Relationships

The Manager, Public Relations will work closely with management and staff of the Investment and Trade Promotion and Planning and Research Departments.

He/she will also be required to maintain good working relationships with local and international media representatives, as well as with public affairs officers in local and international government and corporate entities. He/she will also need to work with local and international printers and graphic artists, in designing and printing promotional materials.

Qualifications 

  1. Education: Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism or related field. A Master’s degree in a related field will be an added advantage.
  2. Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in public relations, communications, or a related field.
  3. Skills:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Media relations experience and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Familiarity with digital and social media platforms.
    • Basic design skills or experience working with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) will be an added advantage.
