POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW

MAC-Communicable Diseases Action Centre (MAC-CDAC) is a university research centre at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) working on research to address priority global health problems such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, neglected tropical diseases and other communicable diseases. With funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, MAC-CDAC is a designated International Centre of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR). Over the next five years, diverse research scientists will be conducting interdisciplinary projects to better understand how new malaria interventions are affecting Plasmodium transmission and malaria prevention in Malawi. These efforts also involve active collaboration with researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Michigan State University, Boston University, Harvard University, and University of Michigan. To undertake these activities, the Centre urgently needs the services of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to be based in Blantyre.

Position summary

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will lead studies on malaria vector ecology and evaluation of vector control interventions in Malawi.

Duration of contract: The initial contract will be for one year with possibility for further extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Reporting Line: The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be reporting to the Principal Investigator

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The key responsibilities will include:

  • Launch and oversee studies investigating the associations between malaria vector populations, environmental determinants, vector control interventions, and epidemiological outcomes.

  • Maintain day to day communication with the Principal Investigator and international collaborators to ensure that the studies are implemented using approved SOPs.

  • Lead in the analysis, write up and publication of research findings.

  • Design and lead independent ancillary studies to increase the visibility of the center.

Required education, skills and experience

The position requires an experienced researcher and therefore, candidates must have at least the following:

  • PhD in biology, entomology, ecology or a related field;

  • Strong knowledge of research design and methods, advanced analytical skills, a track record of publications, and excellent organizational and communication skills;

  • Previous experience working with geospatial data and/or statistical modeling will be an advantage, but not required.

  • Ability to work independently and as an effective member of multidisciplinary collaborative teams.

Remuneration

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as applicable to staff in the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. KUHES is an equal opportunity employer.
