Job Title: OpenO2 Biomedical Engineering Intern

Position Overview:

The OpenO2 Biomedical Engineering Internship offers an opportunity for aspiring engineers to gain hands-on experience by applying sound engineering principles in designing, developing, and testing innovative oxygen delivery systems. Interns will engage in technical work across hospitals in Malawi, focusing on maintaining and repairing oxygen concentrators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on oxygen concentrators in various hospitals.
  • Diagnose issues and implement effective solutions to ensure the optimal functioning of medical devices.
  • Assist in         the       development   and      testing of         new     oxygen generation       and   delivery technologies.
  • Collaborate with the innovation team to brainstorm and prototype new ideas.
  • Document maintenance procedures, repairs, and progress in innovation projects.
  • Provide technical support and training to healthcare staff on the proper use and maintenance of oxygen concentrators.
  • Participate in field visits and assessments to understand the unique challenges in different healthcare settings.
  • Collaborate with the Oxygen Alliance team to prepare for webinars, host or present during the webinars, and feature in oxygen concentrator maintenance videos on their YouTube channel.

Education/Qualifications:

  • Currently pending graduation or a recent graduate with a degree in Biomedical Engineering.

Skills:

  • Strong technical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Hands-on experience with medical devices or other technical equipment in a maintenance workshop is a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Knowledge in electronics, microcontroller, and microprocessor technologies.
  • Experience with prototyping Arduino-based projects on the breadboard.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, Python, or related languages.
  • Willingness to travel to various hospital locations within Malawi.
  • Passion for innovation and improving healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings.
