The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCMF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi government in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of children and families with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals and clinical research. We have a vibrant and thriving maternal health program main site at Area 25 Health Centre that ensures prevention/reduction of stillbirths, neonatal deaths and maternal morbidity and mortality. We are situated within the Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.
BCMCF-M invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the position of:
Position: Nursing Officer (pediatric)
Reports to: Senior Nursing and Midwifery Officer
Location: Area 25 Health Centre
JOB FUNCTION
Nursing is an art, and a science dedicated to improving the physical and psychological well-being of patients. Nurses and midwives aim to provide care to patients and their families that is appropriate, effective and efficient in a respectful, caring manner. They are also involved in providing health education that assists patients, families, students, colleagues and communities to learn about health care and make informed decisions
KEY DUTIES /RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO;
- Plans and implements quality pediatric nursing care using the nursing/midwifery process.
- Performs activities of daily living for the patients 24 hours/day.
- Collaborate with other health workers in meeting specific needs of the patients.
- Adhere to standard precautions of infection prevention and control practices.
- Builds therapeutic relationship with patients, guardians and fellow health workers.
- Documents and maintain accurate records of all pediatric nursing care activities performed.
- Maintains professional code of conduct at all times.
- Develops ward/department policies in consultation with other multidisciplinary team members.
- Monitors that all health workers comply with quality standards of care.
- Supervises Nurse Midwives, students and Subordinate Staff.
- Conducts performance appraisal for subordinates and makes recommendations accordingly.
- Compiles weekly and monthly duty rosters for the ward.
- Plans and conduct regular meetings with different cadres of staff in the ward/department.
- Provides measures for ensuring drug safety and record keeping.
- Conducts inventory quarterly and maintains accurate records.
- Provides Supportive Supervision on all pediatric nursing activities in the health facilities
- Initiates pediatric death audits in the department.
- Participates in identification of departmental training needs and conducts on the job training.
- Adheres to continuous professional development.
- Participates and conducts health systems research with regard to pediatric nursing care.
- Uses evidence-based approaches to improve pediatric nursing care.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Minimum of BSc Degree in Nursing and Midwifery obtained from a recognized institution
- Minimum of two years of pediatric nursing care
- Training in Pediatric nursing care is essential.
- Recognized Mentorship Training will be an advantage
- Efficient communication skills in Chichewa and English
- Motivation and enthusiasm to learn and improve
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of care
- Capacity to use critical thinking
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- High level of respect and care for patients/clients
- Masters in pediatric nursing will be added advantage
