The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCMCF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi Government in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of children with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals and clinical research. We are situated within the Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.

Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation has awarded Baylor College of Medicine Global Health a generous grant of $2.25 million to launch the Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Pilot Initiative in Malawi. This initiative, which will be implemented  at Area 25 Community Hospital , aims to tackle cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Malawi. BCMCF-M invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions of:

Position: Medical Officer (MO)

Reports to:       Medical Director

Location:           Area 25 Community Hospital

Job Summary

The MO, responsible for cervical cancer services, will be part of the team that will offer the comprehensive care of patients diagnosed with, or at risk of cervical cancer. This role involves screening, diagnosis, treatment planning, patient education, and long-term care of cervical cancer patients. The MO will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure a high standard of clinical care and will be involved in community outreach and preventive health programs aimed at reducing the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Patient Care: Conduct comprehensive medical evaluations and assessments for cervical cancer patients, supervise diagnostic tests (e.g. Pap smears, HPV testing, colposcopy, biopsies), develop individualized treatment plans, and manage patients throughout their treatment journey, providing follow-up care and psychosocial support.
  2. Prevention and Screening: Lead cervical cancer screening programs, ensuring accessibility for at-risk populations and educating patients and the community on prevention methods, including HPV vaccination and regular screenings.
  3. Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with various specialists (gynecologists, oncologists, etc.) to ensure a coordinated approach to care, participating in tumor board meetings to optimize treatment plans.
  4. Patient Education and Support: Provide counseling and education about cervical cancer diagnosis and treatment options, facilitating access to psychological, social, and palliative support services.
  5. Research and Quality Improvement: Engage in clinical research on cervical cancer, monitor patient outcomes, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance care services.
  6. Community Outreach: Lead awareness initiatives about cervical cancer in underserved communities and collaborate with public health organizations to promote vaccination and screening.
  7. Administrative Duties: Support the MOH-Baylor Foundation Malawi Public-Private Partnership by; strengthening linkages within healthcare facilities, assisting MoH staff in solving specific challenges, reporting on clinical progress, identifying patient care challenges, and contributing  to the development of training and mentorship tools.

Experience and Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Bachelor’s Degree in Surgery (MBBS)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Medical Doctor
  • Certification by the Medical Council of Malawi
  • Strong knowledge of cervical cancer programs and guidelines excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to patient-centered care and preventive health services
