The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to be considered for the following vacant posts in various establishments of the University.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT (ACQUISITIONS AND PROCESSING)

The main purpose of the position is to assist the Librarian in the selection and acquisition of information sources in ordering, receiving, and processing new library materials such as books, journals, audiovisual items, and other resources. Furthermore, the Library Assistant will assist library users to navigate the library, use online databases, and locate resources at other libraries if required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Place requisition orders for new library materials based on the curriculum, purchase requests by departments and sections, and selection decisions made by librarians.
  • Create, maintain and order vendor records in the automated system.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and order tracking systems.
  • Claim outstanding orders.
  • Verify shipments, process invoices and resolve shipping and invoice problems with vendors in liaison with the procurement and disposal unit.
  • Perform original and copy cataloguing of materials in all format.
  • Verify existing information and perform editing to industry and international standards.
  • Identify appropriate bibliographic records using online and other sources and import them into the local system.
  • Perform routine checks to ensure the integrity of bibliographic and customer databases and take action on problems found as directed by the acquisitions specialist.
  • Distribute interlibrary loan, periodicals, and newly acquired material and exchange material to other campus libraries per established guidelines.
  • Participate in programs, attend workshops and courses which foster professional or technical development where applicable and approved.
  • Manage leased collections and coordinate automatic release plans with vendors.
  • Coordinate with other libraries’ inter-library loan departments as necessary.
  • Provide administrative support to the acquisitions department, such as filing, data entry, and generating reports
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by relevant authorities.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Attributes

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science or related qualification from a
  • University of repute.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in an academic library environment with experience in the technical services.
  • Working knowledge of Integrated Library Systems e.g., Library. Solution, Koha, and
  • Microsoft Office Software Word Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic maintenance standards and practice and library automation.
  • Excellent, analytical, and demonstrated problem-solving skills; strong aptitude for detail and accuracy are required.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, discretion, and sound judgment; demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality while working within the College policies.
  • Understand protocols for accessibility.
  • Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience, and styles.
  • Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT (REFERENCE SERVICES)

To assist in providing reference assistance to patrons and performing related duties as required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist library patrons with information searching and retrieval.
  • Effectively identify the patron’s information needs in a manner that puts the patron at ease using effective listening and questioning skills for a positive interaction.
  • Assist patrons in the use of library digital and electronic systems.
  • Assist with the development of library guides and bibliographies when appropriate.
  • Manage the circulations desk.
  • Sort publications, books and other literary items and return them to their proper shelves and storage areas.
  • Prepare and conduct Information/digital Literacy sessions for patrons.
  • Market library materials and services.
  • Process, classify, index and catalogue library materials.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by relevant authorities.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills, Attributes

  • Bachelor of Library and Information Science with relevant experience in an academic library. OR
  • Diploma in Library and Information Science with 5 years’ post-qualification experience.
  • Knowledge of information resource platforms.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Good work ethics.
  • Knowledge of library information systems
  • Knowledge of common productivity software
  • Excellent pedagogical skills.

Terms and Conditions of Engagement

All the successful candidates will be engaged on an initial 2-year contract before they can be considered for permanent appointment based on satisfactory performance. Remuneration will be in line with LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service applicable to staff on fixed-term contract.
