Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS)

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment, and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments, and to further provide for matters incidental to, or connected with, standardization.

The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies:

Job Title: Laboratory Technician (Engineering and Materials)
Grade: BS8
Reporting to: Senior Laboratory Technician
Responsible for: Senior Laboratory Assistant
Number of posts: 2

Job Purpose

To effectively and efficiently generate analytical data.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Preparing reagents, glassware and samples of analysis;
  2. Analyzing samples and recording of analytical results in workbooks;
  3. Reporting results to supervisor;
  4. Ensuring that all equipment is in good condition;
  5. Reporting faulty equipment to supervisor;
  6. Initiating requisition of laboratory supplies such as glassware, equipment and other consumables;
  7. Ensuring that work benches equipment, glassware and the laboratory in general is clean at all times;
  8. Organizing disposal of obsolete sample from the laboratory
  9. Undertaking calibration checks for equipment and arranging for their corrective maintenance;
  10. Initiating preventive and corrective maintenance;
  11. Sampling of tests items and
  12. Appraising the performance of Senior Laboratory Assistant.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Diploma in Civil Engineering plus a minimum of two (2) years’ experience or a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering plus One (1) year experience in relevant field
