LABORATORY QA/QC OFFICER

Job Summary

The Laboratory QA/QC Officer will work closely with the Laboratory QA/QC Coordinator and Laboratory Director to implement and monitor appropriate technical QA/QC functions of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical functions to assure validity of test results and chain of custody specimens.

Technical

  • Assist in design and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures for laboratory testing.
  • Train Laboratory Technicians and Receptionists in test procedures and QA/QC procedures.
  • Monitor and assist the laboratory supervisors in competency assessment of technicians.
  • Monitor the education of all laboratory staff.
  • Provide expertise in troubleshooting general laboratory problems and specific assay problems.
  • Monitor all external proficiency testing, from receipt to testing, to the final reporting of results. Ensure timely submission of test results.
  • Investigate and respond to any deficiencies sent by SMILE and the Network Lab groups or EQA providers.
  • Review the monthly QC data from all departments and send them to the Domestic QA/QC Coordinator at the Primary Network Laboratory.
  • Monitor the QC testing of 10% HIV and 20% hCG rapid testing of all clinics; complete monthly HCT clinic supervisory visits and review HIV rapid test run logs and QC logs.
  • Summarize the monthly pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical problems on the Monthly QA/QC Specimen Management Log.
  • Respond to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and appropriate manner.

Support

  • Assist with implementation of new study protocols, new instruments, new methodology and training as needed.
  • Assist with training and problem solving as needed.

Safety

  • Follow all laboratory procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective equipment and awareness of blood-borne pathogens.

General

  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude in relationships with co-workers and other personnel.
  • Meet or exceed quality assurance levels of the laboratory and UNC Project collaboration.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patients, patient results and project operations.
  • Serve as an effective representative to physicians, nurses, counsellors and visitors in a courteous and empathetic manner.
  • Follow laboratory and collaboration polices.
  • Use all facilities and supplies with care and in a cost-effective manner.
  • Assist or carry out other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director or Laboratory QA/QC Coordinator.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical, Biological or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Registered with Medical Council of Malawi
  • Minimum one year with QA/QC experience
  • Those with laboratory research experience will have an added advantage
