Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organisation dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries

Founded in 1968, Concern works in 25 countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean with its headquarters in Ireland. Concern started working in Malawi in 2002 and currently focuses on climate and environment, social protection, gender and social inclusion, sustainable food systems for food security and partnerships. For sustainability and lasting change, our advocacy and influence, people centred and evidence based approaches focus on system strengthening and resilience building as we seek to address the root causes of poverty.

Concern invites applications from interested candidates qualified for the following Internship positions;

Waste Management Intern – (1 Vacancy)

Duration: Three (3) Months

Duty Station: Lilongwe

The Intern will support the RESET Project activities in working with five groups of women and youths in the informal settlements of Mtandire, Chinsapo, Mtsinje, Mgona, and Area 25 in the area of waste management.

Specific Intern Outputs

  • Support the RESET project by assisting women in waste sorting and sourcing and ensuring proper feeding of the systems.
  • Liaise closely with CCODE and EcoGen to conduct consultations with waste entrepreneurs
  • Support the process and implementation of standard operational procedures and generate learnings.
  • Support waste management entrepreneurs in implementation of the standard operational procedures on bio digester feeding, product harvesting
  • Work closely with the Project Manager in programme activity implementation
  • Work closely with RESET partner organisations and support their activities
  • Participate in dissemination of programme learning with stakeholders at district level
  • Document and share summary notes of meetings, activity reports, or workshops attended
  • Collaborate with the MEAL, Operations and Finance teams
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Focal Person/Mentor
  • Adhere to the standards of conduct outlined in the Concern Code of Conduct & its Associated Policies

Qualifications

  • A Degree in Environmental Science, Waste Management, Renewable Energy or relevant field
  • No Experience required
  • Good inter-personal communication, networking, presentation and engagement skills
  • Good understanding of climate change, adaptation, resilience and Gender
  • Strong interest in waste management and environmental sustainability
  • Good computer proficiency with MS Office specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

 

Market and Business Intern – (1 Vacancy)

Duration: Three (3) Months

Duty Station: Lilongwe

The Intern will support the RESET Project activities in working with five groups of women and youths in the informal settlements of Mtandire, Chinsapo, Mtsinje, Mgona, and Area 25 in the area of business and markets

Specific Intern Outputs

  • Conduct market research to identify potential markets and customers for products generated from waste management, such as biogas, fertilizer, and recycled goods.
  • Support waste entrepreneur marketing committees in developing marketing strategies and plans to promote these products within the local community.
  • Liaise with CCODE, Ecogen & Waste Entrepreneurs to understand market needs & preferences.
  • Support the creation of marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, and social media content.
  • Support Waste entrepreneurs group marketing efforts and plans
  • Assist in organizing and participating in community outreach events and promotional activities.
  • Support waste entrepreneur marketing committees to understand market trends and provide insights to improve product offerings and marketing approaches.
  • Support in the conducting groups marketing reviews.
  • Collaborate with the MEAL team to assess the impact of marketing efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Focal Person/Mentor.

  • A Degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Environmental Science or relevant field.
  • Good interpersonal communication, networking, presentation and engagement skills.

Research Intern – (1 Vacancy)

Duration: Three (3) Months

Duty Station: Lilongwe

The Intern will support the RESET Project activities in working with five groups of women and youths in the informal settlements of Mtandire, Chinsapo, Mtsinje, Mgona and Area 25 in conducting Research

Specific Intern Outputs

  • Support review of reports, programme documents and other available data to generate learnings on site selections, waste sorting, sourcing waste management sustainable practices
  • Support the implementation of consultation meetings including interviews, need assessments and focus groups
  • Assist in analysing collected data and prepare reports summarizing findings and recommendations
  • Assist in preparation of findings presentations and dissemination materials for various stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with CCODE, Ecogen and Waste Entrepreneurs to gather field data and insights.
  • Assist in proper documentation and archiving of research data and reports.
  • Support the MEAL team in tracking project outcomes and sustainability
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Adhere to the standards of conduct outlined in the Concern Code of Conduct and its Associated Policies

Qualifications:

  • A Degree in Environmental Science, Waste Management, Renewable Energy or a related field.
  • Good with research especially data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation
  • Good interpersonal communication, networking, presentation, and engagement skills.
  • Strong interest in research and environmental sustainability.
  • Good computer proficiency with MS Office specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint
