Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA)

The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) was established by Section 7 (1) of the Environment Management Act (EMA) of 2017 as the principal agency for the protection and management of the environment and sustainable utilization of natural resources. MEPA coordinates, monitors, supervises and consults with all relevant stakeholders on all activities relating to the utilization and management of the environment and natural resources.

The MEPA is inviting applications from suitable, highly qualified, experienced and motivated candidates to fill the position of: Inspection and Enforcement Manager tenable at its secretariat situated in Arwa House, City Center, Lilongwe.

INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT MANAGER

Reporting to : Director of Assessments and Inspections

Job summary

To provide technical leadership on inspections and enforcement of environmental and natural resources legislation, policy and standards

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate compliance to pollution control measures that will sustain development and collect information on various environmental issues to aid pollution control.
  2. Supervise the facilitation of inspection of potentially polluted sites so that they comply with environmental standards and requirements.
  3. Supervise the preparation and submission of Environmental Inspection reports.
  4. Recommend penalties to be imposed for non-compliance to environmental standards and laws.
  5. Represent the Authority at meetings organized by various government institutions, the private sector and NGOs on matters related to pollution control.
  6. Organise meetings, workshops, etc. in conjunction with other government and non-governmental organizations on pollution inspection and enforcement matters.
  7. Perform any other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • MSc/MPhil in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering or any related field.
  • At least five years’ experience in management position in managing pollution, inspection and enforcement matters.

Skills and Abilities

  • People management skills.
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel and Access).
  • High integrity, honesty personality, strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
