Global Health Informatics Institute (GHII)

The Global Health Informatics Institute (GHII) is a non-profit organization working at the intersection of science, engineering and global health to address problems of global health importance through development of local solutions and capacity (https://www.ghii.org). GHII is inviting applications from suitably qualified, motivated, hardworking and enthusiastic individuals to fill the positions on 1-year renewable contracts. This position will support activities under our cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase the utilization of data collected through electronic medical record systems.

Position : Health Data Fellow (2)

Location : Lilongwe

The main role of the Health Data Fellow is to focus on interpreting health-related data to drive evidence-based insights. Collaborate with experts in healthcare, data science, and other stakeholders contribute to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on patient outcomes and healthcare systems.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including clinicians, data scientists, epidemiologists, and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and relevance of analyses.
  • Translate complex data analyzes into understandable insights for non-technical stakeholders, such as medical professionals, policymakers, and patients.
  • Create visualizations and presentations to effectively communicate findings and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop data quality metrics and standards for different types of data to ensure that it is high quality and error-free.
  • Monitoring the quality of incoming data to identify any errors or inconsistencies that may need to be corrected.
  • Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze health data and extract relevant patterns, trends, and insights.
  • Handle data requests from stakeholders within reasonable timelines inline with the SoPs.
  • Prepare reports based on stakeholder indicators on time and if necessary stating trends, patterns, and predictions using relevant data.
  • Prepare training materials and train end-users on new reports and dashboards.
  • Research and implement solutions to overcome data analytics challenges.
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry best practices. Contribute to the creation and maintenance of technical documentation.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business Information Systems, Mathematics or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in database languages like PostgreSQL, MySQL and/or Oracle.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like Python, R and others for data manipulation, analysis and visualization.
  • Strong mathematical/statistical skills to help collect, measure, organize and analyze data
  • Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Experience with healthcare databases and electronic medical records or data driven systems is advantageous
