General Manager (GM)

The Organisation

LUANAR Holding Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lilongwe University of Aariculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) incorporated in Malawi under the Companies Act of 2013. It started its operations in 2005 under the name of Bunda Farm Limited. The holding company aims at efficiently managing its resources and generating additional revenue to support the University’s educational mission and enhance financial sustainability through its various business units such as the fuel service station, the LUANAR farms, the LUANAR Properties and a Seed Processing Unit.

LUANAR Holding Company now seeks the services of the General Manager, tenable at its Lilongwe Head office.

The Role

The General Manager (GM) will provide strategic leadership and direction to ensure the growth, sustainability, and profitability of the LUANAR Holding Company and its business units. The GM will be responsible for executing the Board of Directors’ strategic vision and ensuring that each business unit operates effectively, efficiently, and in alignment with the overall mission and goals of the Holding Company.

The GM will report to the Board of Directors and supervise the Heads of all Business Units.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

A. Strategic Leadership:

  1. Develop and execute a strategic plan that drives the growth and profitability of all business units.
  2. Align the operations of the business units (LUANAR farms, Property Management, Seed processing, and Gas station) with the Company’s long-term objectives.
  3. Identify new business opportunities, markets, and partnerships to expand the Company’s footprint.

B. Operational Oversight:

  1. Oversee day-to-day operations of all Business Units, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with relevant regulations.
  2. Monitor and evaluate the performance of each Business Unit, implementing corrective actions where necessary.
  3. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure and report on the success of the Company’s operations.

C. Financial Management:

  1. Develop and manage the Company’s annual budget in coordination with the Company Accountant
  2. Ensure the financial health of the Company and its Business Units through effective cash flow management, cost control, and profitability analysis.

D. Human Resources & Organizational Development:

  1. Foster a positive organizational culture that promotes teamwork, innovation, and employee development across all Business Units.
  2. Oversee the recruitment, development, and retention of senior management and other Key personnel
  3. Implement performance management systems to ensure that staff are aligned with the Company’s goals and values.

E. Compliance & Risk Management:

  1. Ensure that all Business Units adhere to local, regional, and international laws and regulations
  2. Identify and manage risks across the Company, implementing risk mitigation strategies where necessary.
  3. Develop and enforce corporate governance policies in line with best practices.

F. Stakeholder Engagement:

  1. Act as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and the management teams of the Business Units and the University Office.
  2. Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including investors, customers. suppliers and regulators.
  3. Represent the Company in public forums, industry associations, and community engagements.

G. Reporting & Communication:

  1. Provide regular updates to the Board of Directors on the performance, challenges, and opportunities of the Company and its Business Units
  2. Communicate the Company’s vision, strategy, and performance to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications and Requirements

  1. A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  2. Minimum of 5 years in a Senior Management role, preferably with experience in agribusiness, property management, or a related sector.
  3. Strong strategic planning and execution capabilities.
  4. Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire diverse teams.
  5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Ability to navigate complex regulatory environments.
