Introduction

CADECOM Karonga has partnered with Chitipa District Council to implement a project titled Improved natural resource management to prevent land degradation and encroachment, and to enhance biodiversity, biomass, food security, and livelihoods. The project is funded by EU under UCHI-TA Component 1 of Greening and Growing Malawi to support to Preservation, Restoration and Regeneration of Malawi’s Natural Resource Base and Diverse Ecosystem. This is a 4 years’ project which will be implemented in communities within 5km from the boundaries of Matipa, Mughese and Wilinde Public Forests in Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku in Chitipa District. In this project CADECOM will be responsible for managing the following outcomes; (1) Improved soil and water conservation through land use planning and, water shade management, (2) Increased forest cover through improved management of forest reserves, customary estate forests, and agricultural landscapes. CADECOM Karonga is therefore looking for qualified Malawians to fill the following vacant positions for the project:

Position Title:Field Officer
Location:TA Mwenemisuku, Chitipa District
Reporting to:The Programme Coordinator

Main Responsibility

On behalf of the project s/he will be the link between the district implementing structures (District Coordination Unit, and The District Implementation Team) and the targeted communities. Will be responsible for mobilizing the targeted communities to fully participate in the project. Will be the main link between the targeted communities and community project structures and the district implementation structures.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the line manager to deliver project activities to high standard and within budget and on time.
  • Plan all project activities within the quarter, develop budgets and facilitate implementation in liaison with the Programme Coordinator
  • Conduct project sensitization meetings, beneficiaries’ registration and subsequent club formation.
  • Work with government extension staff (agriculture, forestry, environment, community development) to mobilize communities to participate in the project.
  • Work with government extension staff and decentralized structures to facilitate development, implementation of land use and water shed management plans.
  • Work with government extension staff to train the Lead farmers, VACs and VNRMCs in soil &water conservation techniques.
  • Work with government extension staff to mobilize communities to construct physical soil and water conservation techniques and establish biological water and soil control measures.
  • Work with government extension staff to review and develop co – management plans and oversee its implementation modalities in the targeted public forests.
  • Work with government extension staff to facilitate development of an enterprise based collaborative model for forest management.
  • Work with government extension staff to promote assisted natural regeneration at household and community levels.
  • Work with government extension staff to facilitate implementation of silvi -culture operations in the targeted public forests.
  • Facilitate establishment of tree nurseries and out planting of fast-growing trees and ex-giant bamboos at household and community levels
  • Build the capacity of the natural resource management committees in sustainable natural resource management
  • Represent the project and CADECOM in relevant forums and meetings at Area level
  • Prepare and submit quality periodic activity and progress reports both quantitative (e.g., outputs and outcomes) and qualitative (e.g., significant change stories / case studies) for the project.
  • Any other task assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the following: Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Agriculture or related field required.

Experience

  • Experience in working with the district decentralized structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in community mobilization.
  • Demonstrated capacity in natural resources management in particular customary and public forests.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in implementing land use and watershed management, soil and water conservation activities at community level.
  • Knowledge in enterprise based collaborative model for forestry management.
  • Practical knowledge in agroforestry technologies.  Licensed to ride a motor bike.
