National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM)

1.0 Background Information
National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) is an independent, non-partisan, non-governmental union and professional organization representing nurses and midwives of Malawi. NONM’s vision is to have a strong, vibrant, and visionary organisation that will result in a motivated and empowered nurse and midwife. Its mission is to promote and maintain members’ professional interests and socio-economic welfare to effectively contribute to quality healthcare services rendered to the nation.

2.0 The Post
A vacancy has arisen for the position of EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR and NONM therefore invites applications from interested and suitably qualified candidates for a yearly renewal contract post tenable at its headquarters located in City Centre, Area 13, Lilongwe.

The Executive Director serves to oversee the administrative operations of the organisation at its headquarters. As such, the Executive Director shall be accountable to the National Executive Council and be responsible for the general management of the secretariat commensurate with NONM policies as established by the National Executive Council and the Biennial General Meeting for the organisations sustainability. The specific job requirements and responsibilities are outline below.

3.0 Personal Specifications & Qualifications
The post requires a highest degree of union leadership attributes including knowledge and experience
in unionism, mobilising membership through operationalizing the check-off system to meet stipulated targets for the specific periods, lobbying and advocacy, team building, motivation, commitment, public relations, membership drive, and willingness towards extensive travel

The ideal candidate should fulfill the following

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Be a Nurse/Midwife who is an active member in good standing including 5 years consecutive updated registration with the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM);
  • First Degree in Nursing/Midwifery with up to 5 years of work experience. Those with a Masters qualification will have added advantage.
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years’ experience in senior Trade Union management, project management, lobbying and advocacy, training and facilitation, Human Resource management, and skills in Marketing
  • Updated Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.

4.0 Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic union leadership in operationalizing union policies with application of sound operational principles and strategies meant to increase and retain membership of NONM;
  • Prepare and present performance and progress reports to NONM and funding agencies:
  • Provide technical advice on policy with regard to professional and institutional critical issues;
  • Ensure transparency, accountability, effective and efficient coordination and implementation of the unions financial policies, regulation and resolutions.
  • Develop and lead institutional sustainability and capacity-building initiatives;
  • Develop and steward the annual business plan and monthly rolling forecast, including budgets, project plans and measurable critical success factors for all respective operational and project outcomes;
  • Define and develop new project and business opportunities and the creation of new business partnerships and grants application subject to approval by the National Executive Council of NONM;
  • Develop, serve and service organizational structures and meetings of NONM as per constitution such as: Biennial General Meeting, National Executive Council, Steering Committee, Standing Committees, Ad-hoc meetings, and Professional Interest Groups;
    Develop and implement strategies for effective communication through the union structures and members;
  • Source support materials and other resources for continuing professional development;
  • Apply sound judgment to complex and often untimely situations with minimal supervision;
  • Perform such other lawful duties as may be assigned to him/her by the President, National Executive Council or the Biennial General Meeting from time to time.
