ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:
Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kazakhstan and Boston.
PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations. Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) has its headquarters in Neno District with operations across the country.
We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following position:
Post: ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
Reports to: Infrastructure Manager
Commitment: Full Time (Monday-Friday)
Working Hours: Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/Week)
Location: Neno District, Malawi
Post Summary
The Electrical Engineer will support the Infrastructure Manager in the planning and execution of electrical work with a focus on improving electrical infrastructure and supporting electrical technicians. This role will be key to increasing the safety, uptime, and resilience of the electrical network across all facilities supported by PIHAPZU
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide technical support for the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in PIH-supported health facilities
- Support all aspects of facility electrical projects, including scope of work development, budgeting, procurement/ contracting, and site supervision.
- Evaluate existing electrical infrastructure and design improved electrical systems including breaker sizing, wire sizes, grounding systems, surge/lightning protection, and switchgear.
- Prepare single-line diagrams, bills of quantity, and other technical documentation.
- Support diesel generator management (sizing, installation, operations and maintenance, load/phase balancing, etc.).
- Collaborate with other PIH staff and partners to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems with other facility infrastructure (e.g. biomedical equipment, large motors, water and sanitation equipment).
- Train and mentor electricians and maintenance staff in best practices for electrical safety, maintenance, repair, and project management.
- Supervise contractors on electrical projects, including new installations, system rehabilitation, and emergency repairs.
- Participate in emergency response and disaster recovery efforts as needed
- Support the development of annual and multi-year electrical maintenance/repair standard operating procedures (SOPs) and budgets for care delivery sites.
- Assist procurement team in pre-qualifying electrical contractors for major projects (e.g. hospital electrical network rehabilitation or solar installations) and conducting market analysis to establish relationships with suppliers of high-quality electrical components (e.g. cables, electrical protection devices, etc.).
- Prepare regular reports on project status, performance, and budget.
Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years of experience as a licensed Electrical Engineer, with direct experience managing commercial/industrial scale electrical projects in the Global South, especially in Africa (e.g. designing an electrical network for a new hospital, managing a manufacturing facility’s electrical system, etc.).
- Proven ability to manage facility-scale electrical projects from conception to completion.
- Experience managing diesel generators (sizing, installation, operations + maintenance), three-phase power, load/phase balancing, etc.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical issues.
- Experience using cloud-based information systems and operations management software tools and proven ability to learn new systems/processes quickly
- Experience collaborating with remote colleagues in a diverse, non-hierarchical organization.
- Drafting software proficiency for producing electrical drawings (e.g. AutoCAD).
- Experience managing solar / PV conversions / installations and battery storage / uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery.
