Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET)

The Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is Malawi’s premier institution in tobacco research, extension and training services. Established in 1995 and funded primarily by tobacco growers, ARET’s core activities include development and dissemination of tobacco technologies and training of tobacco stakeholders to sustain and improve agricultural productivity while conserving the natural resources.

An opportunity has arisen for highly motivated professionals with requisite academic qualifications and technical expertise to fill vacant positions as follows:

DRIVER/MECHANIC

Job purpose

To manage a pool of ARET Fleet ensuring efficient use and supervise, coordinate, monitor Drivers’ work activities including vehicle servicing. The position is tenable in Lilongwe

Key Functions

  • Develop weekly travel schedules, coordinating between technical and administrative staff and drivers to allocate use of vehicles.
  • Manage ARET fleet including their service, repair and maintenance; and implement the ARET fleet management database for purposes of tracking vehicle license renewals, fuel usage, maintenance costs, etc.
  • Administer fuel, by processing fuel replenishment and fuel requests, and keep track of fuel card utilization for each vehicle:
  • Ensure that vehicle administration and logs on work and issues are followed.
  • Ensure that any vehicle problems, damage or driving incidents are immediately recorded and reported to the appropriate authorities for action.
  • Ensure monthly reports on vehicles and motorcycles, fuel consumption, maintenance cost and status of insurance are produced.
  • Conduct vehicle minor services on all ARET fleet when necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • MSCE
  • Grade 1 or Level 3 automobile mechanic’s certificate.
  • Driving License Code C1
  • Passenger Service Vehicle Drivers’ license essential
  • Defensive Driving License.
  • Basic Computer Knowledge plus
  • Knowledge of any fleet management database.
  • Three years’ relevant experience
