EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT PLACEMENT: DIRECTOR OF NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
An opportunity has arisen to engage qualified and experienced persons to fill Executive Management positions tenable at MBC Head office in Blantyre.

Under the Communications Act of 2016, MBC is tasked with providing informative, educational, and entertaining content, while respecting human rights and promoting diversity through objective and professional programming. To enhance its operations, MBC is seeking qualified Malawian candidates for the Executive Management role of Director of News and Current Affairs.

DIRECTOR OF NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS GRADE MBC 2 (RE-ADVERTISED)

Purpose of the Position:
Reporting to the Director General, the purpose of the position will be to oversee and direct the production and on-air anchoring of TV and radio news broadcasts and current affairs programs.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Directs the gathering and production of news content for broadcast and digital platforms, utilizing digital tools for enhanced dissemination.
  • Supervises personnel, including work allocation, training, and problem resolution.
  • Evaluates performance and recommends personnel actions.
  • Motivates employees to achieve high performance and productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with MBC and industry broadcasting policies.
  • Generates and evaluates news leads to develop stories.
  • Verifies factual information through interviews, observations, and research to ensure accuracy.
  • Edits news material and reporter submissions; prepare and write stories according to editorial standards; serve as a fill-in host.
  • Collaborates with senior management on policy development and strategic planning.
  • Develops and implements projects to achieve established goals.
  • Participates in budget preparation and management and fiscal planning.
  • Submits directorate reports
  • Monitors equipment usage and maintains inventory.

Required Academic and Professional Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Humanities (English or Drama), Communication, Media studies or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in a senior managerial role at a reputable public or private institution.
