Job Title: Biomedical Engineering Intern

Reporting to:  Biomedical engineering team supervisor

Expected start date: 17th February 2025

Duration: 6 months

Position overview: 

The Oxygen Alliance is looking for a Biomedical engineering intern to assist the our team of biomedical engineers research, create and manage technical content; data entry as well as support with other responsibilities that may arise.

Brief overview of Oxygen Alliance:

The Oxygen Alliance (OA) is a coalition committed to strengthening healthcare systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Focusing on the repair and maintenance of biomedical devices—particularly oxygen equipment—OA aims to address the challenges posed by equipment downtime, scarce technical expertise, and inadequate policy frameworks. By collaborating with governments, professional societies for biomedical engineers, NGOs/donor organizations, manufacturers, and academic institutions, OA works to ensure that essential medical devices remain operational and accessible to those who need them most.

We aim to foster a resilient and sustainable healthcare ecosystem where reliable biomedical equipment underpins effective patient care. Envisioning a future where every piece of donated or procured equipment is fully functional, OA seeks to drastically reduce “graveyards” of broken machines and empower biomedical engineers to maintain equipment safely and efficiently.

To be a globally recognized, multidisciplinary collaborative platform that unites diverse partners in building a sustainable and resilient healthcare ecosystem across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), ensuring that every healthcare facility is equipped with fully functional medical devices, thereby guaranteeing the continuous delivery of high-quality healthcare for all.

Key Responsibilities:

The Biomedical engineering intern will be responsible for:-

  1. Supporting situational analysis
    • Review and cross-check submitted data for errors from the situational analysis being conducted by the oxygen alliance.
    • Accurately input situational analysis data into spreadsheets
    • Validate data entered
  2. Research assistance
    • The intern will work with Biomedical engineers to conduct research on topics relevant to proposed Oxygen Talks, maintenance and how-to-videos
    • Compile information and resources to support content development
  3. Participate in video production
    • Interns will serve as actors or assistants during maintenance video recordings
    • Interns will assist in setting up equipment
    • Interns will assist in shooting the videos
  4. Task management
    • Support the management of background tasks during Oxygen Talks and Partner Talks
    • Monitor our social media pages for comments attend to them with guidance from the Oxygen alliance engineers
  5. BME Konza app support
    • Assist in testing of the BME Konza app
    • Assist in reviewing and giving feedback on updates of the BME-Konza app.
  6. Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor

  • Content creation – Has the ability to assist in writing, reviewing, and organizing technical content.
  • Hands-on experience with medical devices or other technical equipment in a maintenance workshop

Education/Qualifications

Currently pending graduation or a recent graduate of a degree program in Biomedical Engineering.
