The Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) is a parastatal which was established in 1992 by the Laws of Malawi under Section 4 of the Copyright Act of 2016. Its main objective is to promote and protect interests of creative persons including collection of royalties and prevention of unauthorized use of copyrighted works. COSOMA currently performs two main roles: (1) acts as a Copyright Office within the Governmental setup and (2) as a Collective Management Organization for authors and artists. As a Copyright Office, the Society is responsible for the implementation of the Copyright Act of 2016, enforcement of the Law and provision of advice to government on copyright matters. As a collective management organization, it is responsible for promoting and protecting the rights of creative persons in the country and ensuring that they are adequately remunerated for use of their works.

The Society is looking for a well-qualified person to fill the vacant position that exists in our establishment. The position holder will be on a fixed term contract of Three (3) years subject to renewal upon successful performance.

Job Title: Licensing & Enforcement Manager

Responsible to: Copyright Administrator and Executive Director
Responsible for : Senior Licensing Officer

Purpose of the Job

To ensure adherence of the copyright act by licencing users.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing Plans and strategies for the Department
  • Coordinating and monitoring licensing activities
  • Negotiating licensing agreements with users of Copyright works
  • Setting tariffs in accordance with acceptable national and international standards
  • Consolidating departmental budgets and monitoring its implementation
  • Planning, developing and evaluating licencing courses
  • Formulating and implementing licencing policies
  • Appraising staff in the department
  • Supervising licensing activities of the regional offices (Mzuzu and Blantyre)
  • Consolidating monthly reports.

Qualifications and experience

  • Masters’ Degree in Law, Marketing, Mass Communication or any related field. Those with knowledge in Intellectual Property will have an added advantage.
  • At least four years’ experience at Managerial level.
