Malawi School of Government (MSG)

The Malawi School of Government (MSG) is a higher education Statutory Corporation established through an Act of Parliament No. 33 of 2022, which amalgamated the former Malawi Institute of Management (MIM) and Staff Development Institute (SDI). The School comprises a Corporate Office and two campuses, Kanengo (former MIM) and Mpemba (former SDI). The main mandate of MSG is to develop and deliver human resource development programmes and build the capacity of the public and private sector through training, research, consultancy, and advisory services to improve service delivery in Malawi.

DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Job Summary

To provide leadership and oversee the design, coordination, and management of MSG’s academic training programme.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Management

  1. Develop, coordinate, and interpret academic-related institutional plans, strategies, policies, and procedures.
  2. Assess, plan, and monitor the implementation of the School’s academic programmes and activities, including staffing, training programmes, and student recruitment.
  3. Oversee the development and delivery of the school’s academic programmes, including curriculum development, course scheduling, and program assessment
  4. Foster creativity and innovation in MSG’s academic affairs.
  5. Analyse and consolidate the MSG’s quarterly and annual academic programme performance reports for submission to the Director General.
  6. Servicing relevant statutory and ad-hoc committees.

Capacity Building and Training

  1. Conduct staff training needs assessment and provide training, coaching, and mentorship to MSG staff to enhance their academic skills, knowledge, and performance.
  2. Promote knowledge sharing and best practices in academic training services.
  3. Develop and maintain knowledge repositories, tools, and resources to support effective academic training services.

Financial Management and Resource Mobilisation

  1. Develop and manage the annual budget for academic training.
  2. Ensure efficient allocation of resources and adherence to financial guidelines.
  3. Identify other opportunities for improved revenue generation.
  4. Monitor financial performance against targets and implement corrective actions where necessary.

Quality Assurance

  1. Enforce and monitor the implementation of institutional quality assurance standards and policies for MSG.
  2. Monitor and enforce compliance with educational laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements and facilitate accreditation of the MSG’s academic programmes.
  3. Collaborate with faculty members to ensure the quality of instruction and curriculum.

Networking

  1. Cultivate, establish, and maintain partnerships and links for academic training with the government, the public and private sectors, development partners, and the international community.
  2. Collaborate with local and international partners to develop joint academic initiatives, secure funding, and expand the MSG’s reach and impact.
  3. Represent the School at conferences, industry forums, and other events to enhance its academic training profile locally and internationally.

Qualifications and other attributes

  • Master’s degree in Education, Education Administration, and related fields from an accredited or recognised University by the National Council for Higher Education.
  • PhD in a relevant field is an added advantage.
  • 5 years of relevant experience in an academic institution with hands-on experience in academic program development and review, curriculum design, faculty training and development, and student academic support.
  • Must have a research and publications track record with at least five peer-reviewed publications.

Requisite Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Strong leadership and management skills to oversee the academic staff, develop and implement academic policies, and ensure academic excellence within MSG.
  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively engage with students, faculty, parents, and other stakeholders on matters relating to academic affairs.
  • Experience in curriculum development and assessment to ensure the institution’s curriculum is relevant, up-to-date, and meets the academic standards set by NCHE.
  • Understanding of educational laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements to ensure the institution’s compliance.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills to address academic issues and challenges promptly and effectively.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data related to student performance, faculty effectiveness, and academic programs for continuous improvement.
