1. Introduction

Christian Blind Mission (CBM) is commissioning an architectural firm to conduct a site and soil examinations and monitor the construction of a new Pediatric unit at the Mzuzu Central Hospital. This new unit will focus on providing specialized eye care for pediatric patients, ensuring a child-friendly and accessible environment that supports both medical and emotional needs.

2. Objectives

The main objectives are to:

  • Ensure compliance with local and international health and safety regulations and standards for accessibility.
  • Create an environment that is welcoming and comfortable for children and their families.
  • Facilitate an efficient, patient-centered workflow that enhances care delivery.
  • Integrate sustainable and energy-efficient design principles.

3. Scope of Work

The architectural firm will be responsible for:

  • Conducting a thorough site and soil analysis
    • Geotechnical investigation.
    • Environmental impact assessment.
    • Assessment of existing infrastructure and utilities.
  • Providing a Bill of Quantities (BoQ). Preliminary design concepts and site layout and Bill of Quantities (BoQ) are already in place
  • Supervising the construction works
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant building codes accessibility and healthcare standards.
  • Coordinating with Ministry of Health consultants such as structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers.

4. Deliverables

  • Initial Phase:
    • Site and soil analysis report.
  • Construction Phase:
    • Regular progress reports.
    • Quality assurance and compliance reports.
    • Final project report upon completion, including as-built drawings and maintenance guidelines.

5. Timeline

The project timeline is expected to be as follows:

  • Weeks 1-3: Initial site and soil analysis and stakeholder meetings.
  • Weeks 4-52: Construction supervision and regular progress reporting.
  • Week 53: Final project report and handover.

6. Qualifications

The architectural firm should possess:

  • Proven experience in designing healthcare facilities, preferably paediatric units.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating similar projects.
  • Proficiency in architectural software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and 3D modelling tools.
  • Familiarity with local building codes and international healthcare design standards.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.

7. Selection Criteria

Selection will be based on:

  • The firm’s relevant experience and qualifications.
  • Quality and innovation demonstrated in previous work.
  • Understanding of the project requirements and proposed approach.
