The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCMCF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi Government in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of children with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals and clinical research. We are situated within the Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.
Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation has awarded Baylor College of Medicine Global Health a generous grant of $2.25 million to launch the Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Pilot Initiative in Malawi. This initiative, which will be implemented at Area 25 Community Hospital , aims to tackle cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Malawi. BCMCF-M invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following position of:
Position: Laboratory Technologist
Reports to: Program Manager
Location: Area 25 Community Hospital
Job Summary
The laboratory Technician will be responsible for carrying out laboratory analysis for TB, HIV, HPV and cervical cancer related services. Documentation of project data and ensuring that all data collected is accurate and reported in a timely manner.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Planning & Implementation: Develops laboratory support plans (monthly to annual), manages HPV sample load, maintains inventory, and initiates supply procurement with the Lab Coordinator.
- Training & Mentorship: Provides training on cervical cancer and HPV testing, establishes storage guidelines and SOPs, and pursues professional development.
- Coordination: Represents Baylor Foundation-Malawi in partnerships, manages biopsy transfers and follow-up, and leads quality improvement projects.
- Laboratory Operations: Conducts lab tests and research according to SOPs, performs timely analyses, and supports MNH services. Processes, stores, and dispatches biospecimens and data for clinical and research needs.
- Documentation & Protocols: Records lab data, assists in designing lab assays and protocols, maintains safety standards for biospecimen handling, and performs lab maintenance tasks
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a reputable institution
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience at Laboratory Technical (TO) level
- Registered member of Medical C ouncil of Malawi
- Demonstrated skills in performing laboratory techniques including but not limited to molecular assays, hematology, chemistry, immunology and microbiology.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook (using applicable computer software and applications)
- Fluent in English and Chichewa
- Previous experience with TB & HIV programs added advantage
- Experience with Gene Xpert
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Proper handling of potentially hazardous biomaterials, chemicals, or equipment
- Flexibility and willingness to learn new laboratory technologies
- Organization of schedules and tasks
- Ability to work in an intensely demanding environment with time sensitive deadlines
