The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCMCF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi Government in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of children with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals and clinical research. We are situated within the Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.

Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation has awarded Baylor College of Medicine Global Health a generous grant of $2.25 million to launch the Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Pilot Initiative in Malawi. This initiative, which will be implemented  at Area 25 Community Hospital , aims to tackle cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Malawi. BCMCF-M invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following position of:

Position: Patient Navigator

Reports to:        Program Manager                  

Location:           Area 25 Community Hospital

Position Description:

The Patient Navigator acts as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers, assisting patients in understanding their diagnoses, treatment options, and available resources. This role involves coordinating care, removing barriers to care, and ensuring patients are connected to the appropriate healthcare services, social services, and community resources.

 Duties and  Responsibilities

  • Know and understands Cervical Cancer program
  • Link clients to clinical services at the facility
  • Ensure a safe, clean and organized conditions at all relevant service points
  • Work with clients and actively link them between the facility and the community
  • Assist patients with scheduling appointments, follow ups, tests and treatments, ensuring smooth transitions between different levels of care.
  • Provide patients with information about their condition, treatment plans and available healthcare services. Educate patients on how to manage their health conditions effectively
  • Offer emotional support to patients and their families by providing reassurance, guidance and assistance throughout their healthcare journey.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records of patient interactions, care plans, and resource referrals
  • Conduct outreach to educate communities about cervical cancer health care services and preventive care programs.
  • Work closely with healthcare teams, including doctors, nurses, social workers, HSAs to coordinate comprehensive care for patients
  • Prepare monthly workplans
  • Providing support during clinics- counselling of clients, screening and other duties
  • Submit daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as needed

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education
  • Community development training or experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage staff and community members
  • Fluent in written and oral Chichewa and English

Working conditions and physical requirements

  • The work will be in the field which may include early morning, evening, and weekend assignments.
  • The job is physically demanding.
