POSITION: TREE PROJECT OFFICER

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are a non-profit organisation working towards the prevention and relief of poverty in Malawi. We organise our work around these four areas: fuel-efficient stoves, community health, education and tree planting.

We are looking for a passionate and suitably qualified candidate to fill for the position of Tree Project Officer. The purpose of this role is to help shape and drive Mbedza’s tree project in managing the project, monitoring and providing case studies for the project.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To produce project plans that fulfills the Mbedza Project Planning Policy and that tree programmes follow and are based on such plans.
  • To lead in the planning and delivery of tree planting programmes liaising effectively with FRIM and other partners.
  • To recognizing different species of trees, their growth habits, threats and responses to environmental conditions.
  • To plan and implement long term monitoring of the tree project villages so that best practice is maintained.
  • Mentoring and motivating tree project staff, tracking attendance and leave, conducting meetings, and ensuring quality control.
  • Ensure that Tree Project planning takes place and that the various stages of the programmes are completed to a high standard, on schedule and in line with proposals and project plans.
  • Ensure that the whole tree project team meet their policy obligations and have special regard for safeguarding, health and safety and disability issues.
  • To set up effective reporting, intervention and monitoring processes.
  • Complete reports ensuring that they are accurate and on time and in accordance with the reporting policy of Mbedza.
  • To communicate the update with the management on time.
  • To foster, maintain and develop excellent relationships with chiefs and beneficiaries having regard for the reputation of Mbedza.
  • To look for opportunities to develop strategic partnerships and funding opportunities within Malawi.

QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum requirement is a Diploma in the related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

A minimum of 2 years with specific experience in environmental management, forestry or any related field.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Ability to identify issues related to tree management and implementing effective solutions.
  • Ability to meet the set targets and to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Enjoy working in a high paced environment with multiple projects and priorities able to deliver to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent skills in proactively researching, identifying and chasing strong story leads to deliver engaging new content.
  • Strong multitasking abilities and abilities to work to meet objectives and to meet deadlines
  • Excellent writing skills, ideally with experience of writing up interviews/case studies.
  • A commitment and passion to work within an NGO environment.
  • Commitment to the best practice in ethical and production values for content gathering constantly seeking to improve standards (training will be given).
  • Commitment to the aims and values of Mbedza.
  • Fluency (spoken and written) in both English and Chichewa.
  • Good communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Those with Geographic Information System (GIS) skills essential for mapping and analyzing spatial data will have an added advantage.
